Celebrating Sharad Purnima: Significance and Traditions

Sharad Purnima, a significant full moon day in the Hindu calendar, will be celebrated on October 16, 2024. This day holds special importance as it marks the only occasion when the moon shines in its full glory, radiating with sixteen Kala (phases).

Why is Sharad Purnima Celebrated?

Sharad Purnima occurs on the full moon of the Ashwin month and is believed to be a time when nectar rains down from the moon’s rays. Traditionally, Kheer is placed under the moonlight, as consuming it afterward is thought to bring peace, happiness, and prosperity. Lighting lamps during this festival is said to alleviate life’s troubles.

The festival is dedicated to the worship of Chandra, the Moon God. Newlywed women often vow to observe the Purnimasi fast starting from this day. In the Brij region, Sharad Purnima is known as Raas Purnima, celebrating the night Lord Krishna performed the Maha-Raas, a divine dance of love, extending the night to last as long as one of Lord Brahma’s nights.
