Mount Adams, Washington’s largest volcano, has recently exhibited a rise in seismic activity after being dormant for thousands of years. In response, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has begun installing temporary seismic stations around the volcano to assess the potential for an eruption. Despite the uptick in seismic events, the USGS maintains that there is no immediate cause for alarm, keeping Mount Adams’ alert level at GREEN / NORMAL.
The enhanced monitoring efforts aim to detect smaller earthquakes and analyze the reasons behind the increased activity. According to the USGS, “The results of our findings will determine if any additional actions are needed.” Historically, Mount Adams has experienced mainly small lava flows, suggesting that any potential eruption would likely not be explosive.
